Nutrition for pregnant women, like all dietary issues is not without its pitfalls, wives’ tales and outright fabrications. Knowing what a quality diet during pregnancy is and how it supplies excellent nutrition for pregnant women is important.

Mothers with pre-existing conditions like diabetes during pregnancy need to be especially careful.  A few of the most common misconceptions of nutrition for pregnant women are easily explained and create a firm basis for choices regarding diet during pregnancy.

The Placenta Filtration System

First and foremost, there is no such thing as a filtration system which screens mom’s system, preventing anything harmful from passing into the baby.  The placenta functions as a conduit for the exchange of waste from child to mother and nutrients from mother to child.

Baby Steals what it Needs

This myth is so pervasive it is still taught to expectant mothers in high dollar prenatal classes from coast to coast.  The body is not so selfless as to allow the developing fetus to steal vital nutrients.

In the absence of a consistent supply of essential nutrients, mom’s body will self protect.  This effectively cuts the baby off from vital elements needed for healthy growth and development.

Mothers-to-be need to feed their bodies and their babies regardless of any other concern. Weight gain during pregnancy is normal and is not to proper nutrition.

Salt is Bad for Pregnant Moms

In recent years, salt has been cleared from previous accusations of causing high blood pressure during pregnancy. In fact, salt deficiencies have been shown to contribute to pre-eclampsia, a dangerous sometimes-fatal rise in mother’s blood pressure.

New recommendations call for expectant mothers to salt their foods to taste.  Organic sea salt is the best salt option to fill this need.

Eating for Two–Baby and You

While weight gain during pregnancy is normal and healthy, only 4-6 pounds of that should show in maternal fat stores.  Babies do not require tons of extra helping for healthy development.

Moms only need an extra 300 calories per day beginning after the start of the second trimester.  This amounts to only a half sandwich more of food per day.

Healthy Pregnancy and Skipping Meals is Fine

The habit of neglecting to eat frequent small meals usually results in nausea, fatigue and other unpleasant pregnancy complaints.  This is especially true for mothers with other health concerns like diabetes during pregnancy.

To feel her best and keep baby supplied with constant nourishment, moms-to-be need to eat, and eat frequently. Skipping meals and healthy pregnancy do not co-exist.

The choice of a diet drink pregnancy thirst quencher is especially poor.  Diet colas and other caffeinated beverages have a diuretic effect on the body, reducing water levels even more. In addition to this, artificial sweeteners are linked to birth defects and developmental disorders.

Mothers-to-be need to drink more water to maintain healthy body function than they did before the pregnancy. Drinking 64 oz of water per day is a minimum goal; this equals eight, 8 oz glasses.

A better calculation is to drink half the body’s weight in water each day.  This is a preferable way to determine the body’s water needs because the body demands more water as it grows from trimester to trimester. Drinking the same amount of water from beginning to end of pregnancy usually means the third trimester is spent in a state of perpetual dehydration.
